June 24, 2016 Summer Seminar: "BusinessTrak"

Instructor Deborah Gill

Friday, June 24, 2016 – 8:00am to 5:00pm at the Best Western Inn & Conference Center, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980 - Hosted by the Monticello Chapter

BusinessTrak is the track to increased profitability and value in your firm. Technical skills are not the only skill needed to advance yourself or your firm; developing business skills will aid you in making the critical decisions needed to increase your own value and that of the firm. This all-day program will give you:

  • A basic understanding of key financial statements and the financial metrics you need to make them meaningful to you. Learn why utilization is good, but not the only piece of the puzzle and how to gauge true productivity with this one metric. Learn the only key performance indicator that has a 100% correlation with profitability.

  • Advice on fee estimating and proposal negotiation specific to surveying firms. Learn the value of per diem rates and why uncompensated travel time can kill a budget, and how to monitor your projects for success.

  • The keys to a successful firm transition from creating a financially sound organization to identifying and training the next generation of personnel to give your firm a marketable value.

Court Decision on Gordon vs Heritage Church

VAS joined other Virginia design professional organizations in an amicus brief in a case of whether the responsibility for manufacturers' representations, which under the standard industry contracts lie with the manufacturer and the general contractor, should be transferred to the design professional community, as well as whether the accrual of the statute of limitations in Virginia should be controlled by when the design professional submits their last set of construction documents to the owner, when the owner submits the documents to the authority having jurisdiction, or upon issuance of a building permit. The appeal case has been decided. View the court's decision

Virginia Association of Surveyors Unveils New Logo

Reston, VA, January 15, 2016 - The Virginia Association of Surveyors (VAS) today unveiled its new logo. In a video presentation, VAS President David Gardy and incoming President Michael Starling introduced the membership to the new branding.

The VAS Board of Directors was presented with over a dozen professionally developed logos. After careful consideration, they narrowed the field to three. The Board then presented the three finalists to the membership for a vote.

"The new Virginia Association of Surveyors logo is fresh and forward-thinking," said VAS incoming President Michael Starling.

"It's the perfect marriage between tradition and new endeavors, and the past and future of the Virginia Association of Surveyors."

"The new logo is just the first step towards improving the Virginia Association of Surveyors," said President David Gardy. "We're moving our profession and the VAS into the 21st Century with a new logo, a new website and a new sense of purpose."

The new logo will be on display at the 68th Annual General Membership Meeting and Convention to be held January 21-23, 2016 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott in Norfolk, Virginia.
