November President's Column

It’s already late November so Fall Greetings and Happy Holidays!
I can hardly believe that my year as VAS President is soon coming to an end. It has gone by quickly, but as I look back, it was a busy year and a great personal honor to serve the VAS. Recently, Tracy and I had the honor and pleasure of attending the Maryland Society of Surveyors annual convention outside Baltimore. It is fascinating to see how other states host their convention – both from the standpoint of similarities and differences. I attended a UAV seminar and was very impressed by a special session on the progress MSS made on Workforce Development (to see videos of their program, which has been featured on the cover of P.O.B., click here.) Additionally, our own Bruce Frederick gave an outstanding presentation on professionalism.
Our own VAS Annual Convention and General Membership Meeting will be held January 18-20 in Staunton, VA. Click here, review the program, register, earn continuing education credits, improve your practice and standing as a professional surveyor, network with your peers, view new technology in our exhibit hall, donate and bid on items in our silent auction, attend our banquet and awards presentation, as participate in our annual general membership meeting. Being a professional carries with it a certain responsibility. For many years, VAS used the quote “every man a debtor to his profession”. Attending the convention and being an active participant in VAS is part of that professional responsibility. The convention is more than just earning credits. It is about giving back, contributing, and being a fully engaged member of the surveying profession. And, the convention is a lot of fun!
Enjoy the coming holidays and I look forward to seeing you in Staunton in January.
