David Holland, a retired surveyor and NSPS Director for Virginia, represented Virginia Association of Surveyors at the NSPS Day on the Hill event on April 11 at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. He met with a staff member from the office of Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA). He also visited several other offices of members of the Virginia Congressional Delegation, including Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Senator Mark Warner (D-VA).

This was the eighth time that Holland met with members of Congress and their staff for an NSPS event. Holland believes that Rep. Dave Brat was supportive of all the issues that surveyors face such as infrastructure, the Geospatial Data Act, and private sector utilization.

His experience visiting Washington has led him to believe that “the Virginia Delegation is becoming more liberal as opposed to more conservative and several of the Virginia Congressmen are either retiring or getting voted out of office. So, some of these Congressmen are not familiar with NSPS and the issues we bring to the table.”

Holland will likely be returning for next year's event. He also encourages other VAS members to participate in next year's event. Holland mentioned that, "My advice for people considering to do this event next year is be well prepared to discuss the issues and be punctual on arrival for all meetings with Congressmen and Senators and their staff."
